Adios Texas

Today is our last night in Texas.  Yesterday we went to Austin for a few hours.  The weather was rainy so it limited what we could do.  We visited Zilker Park, 6th St. and Rainy St., as well as drove around the city.  I really like Austin!  I would have to visit in the summer to really see what the heat is like.  It would definetely be a good long weekend destination.  It's been great getting to use the kayak.  For some reason I didn't want to use the air conditioner, you hate to appear weak in a campground, but have now reassessed my decision as it has been very hot here.  It is nice and cool at night.  We are leaving for New Mexico early tomorrow morning.  As you can see from my pictures, Chris is still my traveling partner!  My entire family are very quiet in the morning, which is the exact opposite of me.  I get out of bed talking and planning "our" day.  When Matthew lived at home with us and I peppered him with my early morning chatter, he used to say to me "Mom, you get one more question".  Honestly, he said that to me this past December too.  May need to start making some early morning calls to friends as this morning I sensed Chris would have liked to send me swimming with some concrete water shoes.

  1. "Out on the road for 40 days" (opening line to what song and by what band?)... OK not quite 40 days, more like 34. Pam's doing a great job with the Blog and has given me the OK to make a "Random Thoughts" comment every now and then... so here's the first one.

It's been in interesting first month plus living in the RV. Still working on relaxing as it seems when we get somewhere new, there's always so much that we want to see and do or we feel like we are missing out on something. As I typed that, Pam just said why are we sitting in the RV, it's beautiful outside... so just relaxing is still a work in process.

As for our search for a place to "land" (meaning live, after our adventure is over), really liked NC while we were there. For the most part had great weather and got to actually go see some housing developments in Hendersonville that looked promising. Also have liked Boerne, TX (outside of San Antonio) and we just spent a half day in Austin yesterday and liked it also. The two big question marks on both areas are summer heat and traffic. Both areas are growing so fast, they are struggling to keep the road infrastructure up to pace.

Haven't had any major faux pas with the RV yet but you know something's coming... it's just a matter of time (and when and where). We did need to stay in a WalMart parking lot on two occasions so far due to not being able to secure a campsite (both were on Saturday nights, so we ran into the heavy weekend camping traffic). On the upside, both WalMarts were Super WalMarts, so they had bakeries that at least in my humble opinion, make a killer Apple Fritter.

Continuing West tomorrow into New Mexico, then on to AZ. Once we get to Phoenix, we'll make that right turn and start heading North. Still flying by the seat of our pants in terms of route and places to stay but have been very lucky so far. Probably need to do a bit more planning as we head into the summer months and more families are taking vacations (or at least we keep saying we should).

One last comment... I haven't really seen the evening news on TV in over a month and I have to tell you, I don't miss it a bit. When I used to watch before we hit the road, all the stories seemed to be about bad things and bad people and at least so far, all we have met are really good, friendly people. May sound corny but it's been really fun to just "shoot the shit" with complete strangers, not to mention the good advice and info we have gotten on where to (and in some cases not to) go. While we were in Florida, Pam wanted to fish so we went to (where else, the local WalMart) and bought two open reels and rods. We were both pretty clueless on getting them set up and met a family (Charles, Pam and their 13 year old son Nick) who couldn't have been more friendly and helpful in getting us going. We didn't catch anything but did have fun. On our last day at the park, Nick came down to our site and. presented Pam with four lures he had made for her... just a fine young man.

Thanks to all that keep following Pam's Blog (and especially those who comment)... that's all for now.

    Chris

  4. I just can't get over these photos of the cactus! It makes me so happy I get to follow you around the country via the Internet and life vicariously through you. And dad, I'm feeling like you should definitely make some more contributions to the blog. Try not to be abducted in Roswell. ❤️

  5. Hey guys, Melissa and Layne here, thanks for letting us in on your blog! It was awesome meeting the both of you at Inks Lake in Texas. I saw the picture you took of the cactus, weren't those the most beautiful you've seen? Such pretty and healthy plants, we stopped and took pix too. It was so nice of you to let us use your kayak to get the "feel" for the Sea Eagle. That will be our next purchase in the ever growing collection of camping gear, Lol. Glad to see you made it to New Mexico. Enjoy your time there! It's going to be fun reading about your adventures on the open road. Have fun...cluck on!

  7. Is there like a Triple A for Winnebagos? Who would you call if the engine died? Can you change a flat? how much maintenance can you do vs. needing a shop to do it? On the news front: your not missing anything. Keep up the great work on the blog and the pics!!!!

    1. Bobby P. - you're worrying about more things then we are. For the most part we are flying by the seat of our pants. If something comes up, we'll do our best to figure it out. Like the Matt Damon character said in The Martian... work the problem and solve it, then solve the next one and the next... solve enough of them and you get to live. OK, a little dramatic with the last statement.

    1. Just about 4 weeks! I took it out this past weekend, but still couldn't de-winterize, since it still dropped below freezing, so taking it out again this weekend. Spring has finally sprung...hopefully, for good! The same thing I love about it will likely be the same thing that may drive me batty...it's size! Love how compact, easy to drive and park it is...but, with the daughter and dog, it will be TIGHT! Definitely a 1-person RV, but I'm sure we'll figure out how to manage for the 4-5 day drive out to WA!
