We decided to go to the North Rim for a couple of reasons. First off, most people go to the South Rim, and secondly we had no place to stay near the South Rim. We stayed 3 nights in that area and hiked two of those days. The beauty really does take your breath away. It was an hour drive in from our site. All along the way there were signs for bison...didn't get to see even one! I had a bit of a hiccup or maybe a gasp would be more appropriate. We did a hike that was two miles straight in to the canyon...no problem. On the way back I was really struggling with the heat and altitude. It was straight up and I had times where I could only go 50 yards and had to stop and rest. It was rough, real rough. Needless to say the smoker had no problem. I felt terrible by the time we finished. But I did finish and did not have to be rescued...yay me. I now have also discovered Chris's second fear. Mule poop. He just could not get over the fact that the mules pooped and peed all over the trail. I however, was more concerned with my heart stopping. Good times.
Some of our pictures, but they just don't capture the size and beauty of the Grand Canyon.

I see no dog pix - you left her in the rolling house? Afraid she would fly off a ledge?
ReplyDeleteThe hikes can be rough both up and down.
I have walked all the way down to the Phantom Ranch. Your feet pointing downwards for the distance to hike all the way down does a number on your calves. Very tight and balled up and painful. Walking up in heat we would walk 100 steps and then rest. I have only hiked down and up from the south rim. There is some shade on that side especially as you near the top. I am guessing hiking down the north rim exposed you to direct sun almost constantly.
We left London this morning and are in Paris.
Didn’t mean to hijack your blog.
Denise and I decided London could be a landing spot. Bonjour.
No dogs allowed in the National Parks in this area. We left her in air conditioning as it is very hot here. London would be a very nice landing spot! We have never been there.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Our family likes to use the phrase "poco a poco" or little by little- can be used in many situations and hiking is definitely one of them! Glad to hear you made it out safely with no rescue efforts needed.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about the pictures... I look at the pictures we took years ago and they truly do not convey the beauty.
